Safeguarding Standards for Hosts

All hosts must meet the following safety requirements:

1. Property Safety Standards

  • Fire safety equipment (extinguishers, smoke detectors, emergency exits)
  • First aid kits readily accessible
  • Secure locks on all guest rooms
  • Well-lit common areas and pathways
  • Hazard-free environment
  • Clean water and sanitation facilities

2. Emergency Preparedness

  • Written emergency protocols displayed prominently
  • Emergency contact numbers (police, ambulance, mental health crisis line)
  • Nearest hospital/clinic information provided to guests
  • Staff trained in basic first aid and crisis response
  • Evacuation plans for natural disasters

3. Background Verification

  • Identity verification for all hosts and staff
  • Police verification certificates (where applicable)
  • Reference checks from previous guests or employers
  • Ongoing monitoring of host conduct

4. Trauma-Informed Care Training

  • Understanding trauma responses and triggers
  • De-escalation techniques for distressed guests
  • Recognizing signs of mental health crisis
  • Appropriate boundaries and communication
  • Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity

Guest Safety Protocols

We protect guests through:

  • Pre-Booking Screening: Health disclosure forms to match guests with appropriate properties
  • Verified Reviews: Only guests who completed stays can leave reviews
  • 24/7 Support: Emergency helpline for guests experiencing safety concerns
  • Check-In Protocols: Hosts must verify guest identity and provide safety orientation
  • Privacy Protection: Secure, private accommodations with lockable rooms
  • Confidentiality: Health information shared only with chosen host, never publicly

Prohibited Conduct

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited and will result in immediate action:

  • Physical Abuse: Any form of physical violence or restraint
  • Sexual Misconduct: Unwanted advances, harassment, or exploitation
  • Emotional Abuse: Verbal abuse, intimidation, or manipulation
  • Financial Exploitation: Overcharging, hidden fees, or coercion
  • Neglect: Failure to provide agreed-upon services or safe conditions
  • Discrimination: Unfair treatment based on diagnosis, identity, or background
  • Privacy Violations: Unauthorized sharing of guest information
  • Substance Provision: Providing alcohol or drugs to guests (unless medically prescribed)

Mental Health Crisis Response

If a guest experiences a mental health crisis during their stay:

For Hosts:

  1. Ensure immediate safety of the guest and others
  2. Contact emergency services if there's risk of harm (112)
  3. Call National Crisis Helpline: 1800-599-0019
  4. Notify TheHealingStays emergency team: 1800-HEALING
  5. Stay with the guest until professional help arrives
  6. Document the incident for safety records

For Guests:

  • Contact your emergency contact person

  • Inform your host if you need assistance

Reporting Safety Concerns

If you witness or experience any safety concern, abuse, or policy violation, please report it immediately. All reports are taken seriously and investigated promptly.

What to Include in Your Report:

  • Your name and contact information (can be anonymous)
  • Property name and location
  • Date and time of incident
  • Detailed description of what happened
  • Names of individuals involved (if known)

Investigation Process

When a safety concern is reported:

  1. Immediate Response: We acknowledge receipt within 24 hours and assess urgency
  2. Interim Measures: Suspend host account if necessary to prevent further harm
  3. Investigation: Gather evidence, interview parties involved, review documentation
  4. Resolution: Take appropriate action based on findings (warning, suspension, permanent removal)
  5. Follow-Up: Inform reporter of outcome (within confidentiality limits)
  6. Support: Provide resources and support to affected guests

Timeline: Most investigations completed within 7-14 days. Complex cases may take longer.
